RIVER WALK SWIM TEAM

2026

A SWIMMER’S PRAYER

Dear God, another swimming meet

Is scheduled for today.

I’m going to be quite busy

So, I won’t have long to pray.

Bless my Mom, Dad, and Coach

And keep us close to you.

Let the friends I make today

Be loyal, good and true.

Please help me not to forget you, God

Each time I take the blocks.

I sometimes get distracted by

The noise and all the clocks.

Let my starts and turns be quick

My arms and legs be sure.

And help my strokes be smooth and strong

To help me to endure.

Help me find the confidence

I’ve struggled for so much,

So I can find the shortest way

From start to final touch.

And when the droll computer

Writes my times across its face

Please let me not think win or lose

But how I swam the race.

INTRODUCTION

River Walk Swim Team began in 1989 with only 11 swimmers and has steadily grown to nearly 200 with 2025 having 160 + swimmers. In the beginning, our numbers were so small that we swam with another pool. Since that time, our numbers have grown so much that we became part of the largest division of SAIL, the Red Division. It was a proud moment in 2004 when it was announced that we were the winners of the Red Division on the 40th anniversary of SAIL. This accomplishment was the result of endless hours of practice as well as a strong commitment from swimmers, coaches, and parents. In addition, we have also had the honor of being the Red Division’s Quality Point Winner for many years. Currently, we are competing in the Purple Division.

SWIM ASSOCIATION INVITATION LEAGUE (SAIL):

Originally begun as a Parent-Youth Association, four Greenville community pools began competition in the summer of 1964. The organization was renamed (to SAIL) in 1965, and rapid growth in community pools and teams dictated three divisions by the early seventies. Smaller community pools with limited members of youth have joined other SAIL affiliates in order to provide their children with the SAIL experience. Currently, SAIL has six divisions: Red, Purple, White, Blue, Green, and Gold. The SAIL website is https://sail.swimtopia.com. During the summer season you can also check on individual and team results at https://sail.swimtopia.com.

The RWST operates as a member of the Swim Association Invitational League of Greenville (SAIL). SAIL provides an administrative structure whereby member teams in the Greenville, South Carolina area may participate in a competitive swim situation of equal opportunity for all. The River Walk Swim team operates in a manner that is consistent with and supportive of all SAIL standards of participation, administration, and ethics.

As a member of SAIL, RWST (swimmers, parents, volunteer, coaches and Executive Board members) must adhere to the following SAIL Code of Ethics:

  • As a participant, I will refrain from all personal action that might provoke other participants, spectators, or officials to unsportsmanlike conduct.
  • As an individual, I will refrain from offensive or abusive language and will confine myself to proper remarks at the proper time to officials in charge.
  • As a participant, I will respect the dignity of the meet in which I am engaged, the officials, the opponents, and the communities they represent.
  • As an individual participant, parent, coach, team, league representative or league officer, I will do nothing that would give myself or my team an unfair advantage over another participant or team.
  • As a coach or parent, I will not engage in nor permit actions which will interfere with the operation of the league or its meets; nor will I intrude upon the area of the league and meet officials.
  • As a meet official or league officer, I will return courteous answers to legitimate questions and recognize remarks made by authorized persons. I will not allow any acts by others which do not uphold the standards set forth in the by-laws of the league.
  • As a participant of the meet, I will maintain an attitude of true sportsmanship.
  • As a member of SAIL, I pledge myself to create a mature, healthy, and fair atmosphere for all swimmers at all times.

GOALS OF SWIM TEAM

Build self-esteem

Improve swimming skills

Generate healthy competition, respect and sportsmanship

Encourage self-discipline and commitment

Respect individual differences

Promote camaraderie and team spirit

SWIM TEAM MEMBERSHIP

  • A swim team application must be filled out and returned with a check for the full amount at registration. A copy of each swimmer’s birth certificate is required to be on file with the team. If you swam with RWST in the 2025 season, we have a copy and you do not need to bring a new one. If you are new and/or skipped the 2025 season, you need to provide a NEW COPY of your child’s birth certificate at registration.
  • Your child, provided the child’s age on May 31 does not exceed 18 years old, is eligible to be a member of the swim team.
  • Your River Walk Pool dues must be paid in full. If you are a non-resident with a pool membership, you must have a FAMILY membership to be a member of swim team.

Some children may require swim lessons before they are able to fully participate in swim team practice sessions. While all children meeting the above requirements are welcome to join the team, our coaches are unable to teach basic swimming skills on an individual basis during practice scheduled practice times. However, they will be able to give private lessons at a rate to be determined. One of our coaches will contact the parents of a swimmer who may need additional instruction. This is a judgment with the child’s safety as the only criteria. Swimming speed and style are NOT a factor in determining the need for additional instruction. If you have any questions regarding your child’s participation on the swim team, please contact one of the coaches, the SAIL representatives, or the president of the swim team committee.

Photographs of RWST and RW swim meets may be included on the River Walk Association website and/or social media group, plus RWST website and/or social media groups. If you do not wish to have your child's picture included, please notify the RWST President(s) in writing prior to the first swim meet.

SWIM TEAM LEADERSHIP

The River Walk Swim Team (RWST) Executive Board and committees provide organizational leadership. These volunteer groups of swim team parents are responsible for all phases of team activity, from hiring coaches to running meets. Because the success of the swim team depends on volunteer help from all parents, your help is always needed and appreciated! To help with any committee, contact a committee chairperson. Or if you have any questions about opportunities please contact the RWST President.

A. Executive Board

All activities of the Swim Team are governed by an Executive Board which can consist of the President(s), Vice-President(s), Secretary, Treasurer, SAIL Representative(s), Records Committee Chairperson (Computers), Immediate Past President, President-Elect, and Guppy Parent. These positions are filled on a volunteer basis – your interest in filling a position is always valued.

B. Duties of the Executive Board

The duties of the Executive Board members are as follows:

President(s) – The president is the chief operating officer of the Swim Team. He/she presides at all meetings, signs and executes any and all documents and instruments which may be required on behalf of the Swim Team, coordinates all activities with the other officers and committees, and performs any and all acts that might be required of a president of a similar organization. The president is responsible for all written communications dealing with the Swim Team and or appoints a designated officer to do so, including reports to the River Walk Neighborhood Association, and email newsletters for the Swim Team members. All swim coaches/trainers report directly to the president. In addition, the president serves as a member or appoints a designated officer to the Steering Committee of the River Walk Neighborhood Association and is a member or appoints a designated officer to the pool committee.

Vice-President – The vice-president performs the duties of the president in the absence of the president. If the president deems it necessary for carrying out all duties, more than one vice-president may be appointed. The president will define the duties of each vice-president.This is the person who is being “groomed” for being President the following year as needed.

Secretary – The secretary records the minutes of all meetings of the Executive Board and maintains and acts as the custodian of all records of the Swim Team. He/she will also assist in keeping the RWST handbook and bylaws current and sending Notices.

Treasurer – The treasurer is the custodian of all funds of the Swim Team, proposes budgets, prepares financial statements, and presents reports as called for by the president and/or Executive Board. The treasurer is authorized to reimburse other board members for monies spent on behalf of the Swim Team. The board must have approved the expenditures, and the treasurer must receive proper documentation.

SAIL Representative(s) – The SAIL Representative(s) carries out all duties required by the SAIL organization and represents the Swim Team at all SAIL meetings and functions. In addition, the SAIL Representative(s) acts as a link between the Swim Team and SAIL. If the RWST board deems it necessary for carrying out duties, more than one SAIL Representative may be appointed. Each SAIL team has one vote at all SAIL board meetings, and represents one vote at each RWST board meeting.

Immediate Past President – The immediate past president is responsible for ensuring that ‘the wheel isn’t re-invented’ and helps provide useful information of what worked and didn’t work in past swim seasons.

Computers – A SAIL Certified position, the chair of the computers committee serves on the Executive Board.

Guppy Team – The chair of the Guppy Team serves on and reports to the Executive Board.

C. Meetings

The Executive Board meets at least monthly during the active swim team season on a date determined by that body. Any member of the Swim Team committee may request permission to be present at and/or address any Executive Board meeting.

D. Committees

The Executive Board appoints committees, or accepts volunteers, to coordinate and carry out certain activities. The following is a list of typical committees and their responsibilities. However, the Board may add committees, delete committees, or combine/change responsibilities of committees as deemed necessary for the smooth functioning of the Swim Team.

Concessions – At each home meet, concessions are sold as a major fundraiser for the Swim Team. The concessions committee coordinates all activities related to the selling of concessions. The concessions committee requires parental assistance at all home meets.

Spirit/Social – This committee plans and orchestrates spirit, social, and family-oriented activities throughout the swim season. The purpose of the spirit committee is to build and strengthen team unity in an effort to be supportive and encouraging for all children participating on the RWST. Parents of the Championship/Classics (C/C) swimmers will organize that week’s activities. Extra help or ideas for activities are always appreciated for this committee.

Banquet/Awards – This committee will help plan and arrange details related to our end-of-season awards celebration, including site location, catering, decorating, entertainment, DVD, and etc.

Meet Setup/Volunteers/Equipment – Committee members help put up and take down the clerk of course tents (2) and our larger tent used at each home meet. In addition, we need volunteers to set up our tent (s) for the divisional meet and C/C meets. Setup also includes home meet coordination of volunteers to get the pool deck ready, set up no parking signage, and coordinate meet volunteers.

Sponsorships and Fundraising– Coordinates all fundraising projects, including luminary sales (late fall for December event), spirit wear, etc.

E. Meet Staffing Needs

In order to hold a dual meet, approximately 80 volunteers are required to work in a variety of areas. THE REQUIREMENT OF RWST IS TO HAVE EVERY FAMILY VOLUNTEER EVERY MEET YOUR CHILD SWIMS IN. Please review the job descriptions that follow and think about the ways that you can share your talents and skills with the team. Everyone will be asked to contribute, and there will always be someone to work with who can show you all that you need to know. If you would like to become a SAIL certified official, there are clinics held for jobs that require certification (see a board member about upcoming SAIL certification classes.) Please let a member of the Executive Board know if you have an interest in filling any position included in this handbook.

The Executive Board appoints persons, or accepts volunteers, to coordinate the staff necessary to run swim meets and other related activities. The coordinating positions include the following (more details may be found at www.swimsail.org):

Referee – SAIL Certification is required(classroom training). This job requires a thorough knowledge and understanding of USA and SAIL rules and commitment to the swimmers of fair and competitive conditions. The principal function of this job is to see that a meet is properly conducted according to the rules. This person has the authority to be judge, jury, and arbitrator of all problems and protests that may arise during a swim meet. To serve as Referee, a person must be certified in all six areas: Referee, Starter, Stroke & Turn, Timer, Records, and Clerk of Course. To serve as Referee, a person must attend classroom training for: Referee, Starter, and Stroke & Turn.

Starter – SAIL Certification is required(classroom training). This job gets the swimmers up on the starting blocks, announces the stroke, and begins the electronic start. The home team provides the Starter; the visiting team provides Assistant Starter. To serve as a Starter, a person must attend classroom training for Starter and Stroke & Turn.

Stroke & Turn – SAIL Certification is required (classroom training). This job observes swimmers as they swim to enforce the rules of each stroke. Each team must provide three (or more) Stroke & Turn judges for each half of a meet. Knowledge of swim strokes is extremely helpful but not required.

Timer – SAIL Certification is required (online training). For each lane there are 3 timers with stopwatches and 1 timer to record the results on the time card. The timer that records results must have legible handwriting. The teams provide watches and time cards. The home and visiting team each provide half of the timers needed. The Head Timer(s) must be SAIL certified as a Chief Timer.

Clerk of Course – SAIL Certification is required (classroom training). The Head Clerk(s) of Course must attend SAIL classroom training. Head Clerk of Course will deck certify other Clerk of Course volunteers with a group training at RW pool. Head Clerk of Course works with the computer operator the day prior to the meet to put labels on all event cards. Then at the meet distributes the cards to the correct swimmers. Head Clerk of Course handles all (day of meet) scratches of absent swimmers and combines heats as necessary. Assistant Clerks keep the swimmers in proper order and move them up to the starting blocks in a timely fashion using the swimmers event card and a heat sheet as reference. The visiting team usually provides at least 1 clerk of course to assist the home team. Organizational skills are needed by the head clerk.

Records – SAIL Certification is required(online training). The Head of Records must be SAIL certified. Runners bring the blue time cards to the records table. Records places the cards in heat/lane order, determines the median time, circles it, has their partner check it, and gives it to the computer person to input. Records are staffed by visiting and home teams.

Runners – The Head Runner will deck train assistant runners at RW pool before the first home meet. Pick up time cards from the timers and takes them to records table. Runners are provided by the home team.

Bullpen – NO SAIL Certification is required. Bullpen volunteers stay with the swimmers during the meet and oversee the area where swimmers gather between events. They line the swimmers up by event using a heat sheet as reference and make sure they go to the Clerk of Course on time. It is not the Bullpen volunteers' responsibility to manage the behavior of the swimmers. Each team provides volunteers for their own Bullpen.

Ribbons – NO SAIL Certification is required. The ribbons committee members affix swimmers’ labels onto ribbons for each finisher. The ribbons are then filed into each swimmers file.

Hospitality – NO SAIL Certification is required. This committee is responsible for serving water to home and away volunteers during the meet. In addition, this committee is responsible for printing/maintaining our volunteer name badges and securing volunteers to provide large coolers of ice for water distribution during home meets (separate from concession ice). Please note: if you provide one of the coolers of ice you are still required to volunteer during the meet.

Setup/Cleanup – The home pool area must be readied for the meet by removing furniture etc. and reset at the end of the meet for the neighborhood’s use the next day. Parents are required to assist in these tasks. You are expected to fulfill this duty along with “every family’s obligation to volunteer every meet your child swims in”. If you are unable to perform your volunteer assigned duty, YOU are responsible for finding a replacement and notifying the RWST President.

F. SAIL TRAINING 2026

All Starters must take both Stroke & Turn and Starter tests.

All Referees must take S&T, Starter, and Referee tests.

Everyone must take the appropriate online tests.

All training classes are going to be held online this year. Link to materials and for more information- https://sail.swimtopia.com/certification.

SWIM TEAM AGE GROUPS

The River Walk Swim Team is comprised of swimmers in the following age groups: Guppies (generally 5 to 8 years), 8 & Under, 9/10, 11/12, 13/14, and 15/18. All swimmers must participate in their age group practices.

SWIM TEAM SEASON

Generally, the swim season runs from late May to the end of June with C&C taking place mid-July.

GUPPIES

The River Walk Guppy Team is the heart and future of our “big” team! The Guppies program is for young swimmers who may not be quite ready for the “big” team. They will learn competitive swimming skills, sportsmanship and have fun in the water. In borderline cases, a child may participate in the program for the first two weeks in an effort to meet this goal. Membership fees (minus SAIL insurance fee; contact leadership for details) will be returned if there is unforeseen difficulty in achieving the Guppy swimmer’s goal and/or happiness. All RWST coaches will coach the Guppy team.

There is no maximum age limit in Guppies but the minimum age will be 5 years old (by the May 31st SAIL date) unless a 4 year old is able to swim, follow directions, does not need a parent with them the entire 30 minutes of practice, and has a good attention span.

Guppies are a vital part of the RWST! All guppy members are encouraged to participate in all social activities and to attend “big” team meets. Likewise, all “big” team members are encouraged to support the Guppy Team by attending any/all Guppy Meets.

*All swimmers should wear goggles and have caps if their hair is long or in their face, even the boys.

*They need to be comfortable in all areas of the pool they will be swimming in.

*They need to be comfortable with their HEAD in the water (this does not mean just a splash on the face).

*There should be some forward progress ability with doggie paddle type stroke (at least 10 feet or so).

*There should be some progress on their back with kicking and arm movement.

*They need to have a productive flutter kick on both front and back. The child should not be vertical in the water at any time during practice; they should be horizontal or inclined.

*Ability to back float at least 10 seconds. They should have airplane arms and their legs can be together or apart; some may need to bend their knees.

*If the child cries every practice then this is not for them.

Any requirements are for the safety/happiness of the swimmer.

Please remember Guppy Team is not a lesson or water adjustment class.

PLEASE NOTE: Once your ‘guppy’ swims in a big meet your swimmer you will need to declare on SwimTopia for meets moving forward.

BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS

Swimmers are expected at all times to follow the directions and instructions of the coaching staff. A respectful attitude toward coaches and teammates is required.

The goals of the RWST are to promote respect and sportsmanship, self-discipline and commitment. Therefore, abusive language, lying, stealing, and/or vandalism will not be tolerated.

The coaches will keep order; if a swimmer is blatantly ignoring instruction and disrupting practice (uncooperative children and/or those with unsafe pool behavior), the offender will sit out the rest of practice for the first offense. The swimmer will be sent home for the second offense and the Head Coach, along with the parent, will determine the appropriate action.

During meets it is expected that swimmers behave appropriately in the bullpen area as well as anywhere on deck or the general pool area. It is the responsibility of the parents, not the bullpen volunteers to manage inappropriate behavior. If swimmers are behaving inappropriately, it will be brought to the parents’ attention. Thank you.

Since the swim team members represent the River Walk community when they are at swim meets or at social events, swimmers are required to exhibit proper behavior. They should demonstrate good sportsmanship toward other swim teams. Because the swim team is comprised of many age groups, older swimmers should remember that the younger swimmers look up to them, and should accordingly, act responsibly (e.g., refrain from abusive language, be encouraging, friendly and helpful).

**No Practice on July 4th. Last day of Guppy practice is June 26th.**

Swimmers should be at the pool 10 minutes before their practice session is to begin. Practice will begin as scheduled, weather permitting; and, if there is any doubt about practice being held because of the weather, check your email or remind app. As a general rule, practice will be held if it is raining (unless it is accompanied by lightning/thunder or if it is extremely cold).

Parents are asked to refrain from talking to the coaches during practice sessions. The coaches have only the practice time to work with the swimmers, and their focus is on the team. Please feel free to leave a message in the coaches’ file in the Family Folder Box, and a member of the coaching staff will contact you as soon as they are able or please contact the RWST President(s).

To avoid disruption of swim practice, please be on time! Swimmers may leave practice early only with a note from the parents for children 10 and over, and with the Head Coach's permission. Please remember, a responsible adult must accompany and stay with the swimmer(s) if 10 and under.

SWIM MEETS

During swim meets, there are 60 individual events, plus 20 relays. Boys and girls in age groups from “8 and Under” to “15 to 18” (15/18) compete in individual events: Short Freestyle (Short Free), Individual Medley (IM), Breaststroke (Breast), Long Freestyle (Long Free), Backstroke (Back) or Butterfly (Butter or Fly). They may also compete in the Medley Relay and/or the Freestyle Relay.

Events at swim meets are scheduled by age groups. An event is the unique combination of age, sex, and stroke, such as: “9/10 Girls Short Free”. Each event may have several heats, depending upon the number of swimmers. Each swimmer can swim up to, but not more than, 3 individual events and 2 relay events per meet. You must declare for each meet on SwimTopia.

The coaches will let the swimmers know what time they need to be at the pool for each meet. Please allow sufficient travel time so that the swimmers arrive on schedule, especially when we are visiting other teams. Arriving 15 minutes before your scheduled warm up time allows the children time to get settled and get ready to go in the water.

If a meet is canceled due to weather or other unexpected event an email will be sent out as soon as possible. Not everyone can be called in a timely manner. Often we may wait til arrival time to make that decision as we try not to cancel as rescheduling is difficult. If a meet is canceled in progress we do not reschedule the events missed. Please do not assume it is canceled, rather assume it is on.

WHAT TO BRING TO A SWIM MEET

There are a number of items that you should bring to a meet for your swimmer(s) in order for him/her to perform at their best. Please remember to label all items.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Meet Swim Suit – also a practice suit for back-up.
  • Meet Goggles – at least two pairs
  • Team Swim Cap – distributed during the 1st weeks of practice. There will be a fee for a replacement.
  • Swimming Clothing – T-shirts, shorts, shoes/flip-flops, sweatshirt / sweatpants (for chilly evenings).
  • Towels – bring extras.
  • Water Bottle – drink plenty of water to stay well hydrated. Soda drinks contain carbons that may upset your stomach if you are nervous.
  • Food – Bring healthy snacks such as trail mix, fruit, bagels, fruit juices (Gatorade, Power Ade, etc.) Do not bring carbonated drinks, candy, etc... Swimmers should eat a high carbohydrate dinner the night before meets (pasta, rice). Swimmers should eat lunch before the meet, preferably around 2:00 pm, but not later than 3:00 pm. Please remember no glass containers at the pool!
  • Folding Chair – There is usually limited seating for the parents at these meets, so bring chairs for yourselves and for your swimmer in the Bullpen area.
  • Don't forget your RWST Spirit and be ready to swim fast!!!

PARENTS REMEMBER: NO ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES ARE ALLOWED DURING SWIM MEETS AND NO SMOKING ON DECK.

PURPLE DIVISIONAL MEET

The PURPLE Divisional Meet is on June 26 & 27

Our swimmers will be competing against four other teams in the PURPLE Division to try to achieve the highest possible score. To swim in the PURPLE Divisional Meet, a swimmer must swim in two (2) dual meets during the season. The children in our Division are allowed to swim in up to 3 events (individual) and 2 relays. The coaching staff will determine the best possible events for all swimmers, and will establish relay teams (medley and freestyle) for each age/gender group.

The highest scoring team is the Divisional meet winner. The Quality Point winner is calculated by dividing the total amount of team points by the number of swimmers participating from that team.

To be eligible to swim in the Purple Divisional Meet a swimmer must have participated in at least two (2) dual meets and have a declared Intent To Swim on Swimtopia.

All RWST swimmers are strongly encouraged to participate in the PURPLE Divisional Meet!

CHAMPIONSHIPS AND CLASSICS MEETS

Championships and Classics are scheduled for July 11 & 12

AWARDS CEREMONY/BANQUET
